Science Club

JHS Science Club

Hindi ka pa rin ba makapag-decide kung saang school ka papasok? Dito ka na sa Dr. Victoria B. Roman MHS!

As a Science Club officer, we work on various projects with the help of our teachers and other school personnel. It’s not just about fun experiments; you’ll always experience the joy of creating art in science, participating in contests, and even winning awards. Many students join poster-making competitions and receive numerous accolades, gaining recognition for their talents, which boosts their confidence. After the experiments or activities, you’ll also take quizzes that measure what you’ve learned. You can answer them confidently and even achieve a perfect score because you’ve already completed the activities, making it easier for you to respond. Afterward, the teacher will discuss the lessons further to ensure better understanding.

Unleashing the Power of Reading: A Celebration of National Reading

Notebook
What if we could build a nation of creative and critical thinkers? That is the driving force behind our National Reading Month Celebration.

Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift.

— Kate DiCamillo

With the theme "Pagbasa ay mahalaga para sa pagkatuto at kinabukasan ng bawat batang Pilipino" (Reading is important for the learning and future of every Filipino child), the entire school community united to ignite a shared passion for reading. The campus buzzed with the magic of literacy as students and teachers engaged in a series of dynamic and thought-provoking activities.

From classroom-based initiatives like poster-making, storytelling, and slogan creation, the spirit of reading came alive as students showcased their creativity. However, the highlight of the celebration—and a cherished DVBRMHS tradition—was the literary icon dress-up contest, which featured an exciting twist this year. Participants competed in two categories: cross-gender (individual) and protagonist versus antagonist (duo). This fresh take elevated everyone’s enthusiasm to new heights. Adding to the festivities, sections 7-Magalang and 7-Mahusay delivered captivating performances through singing and speech choir presentations.

Eizen Landicho, the reigning champion in the protagonist and antagonist category, shared his thoughts: “Sa totoo lang, most of us kabataans ay mahilig sa mga pakulo. Kaya, integrating fun activities with literature ay good idea. Maraming nag-engage, almost all Victorians.” His words echoed the sentiment that blending enjoyment with education fosters greater engagement among students.

This year’s celebration transcended mere fun—it carried profound significance. It embodied DVBRMHS’s mission and vision: empowering students to reach their full potential, nurturing patriotic Filipinos, and creating a child-friendly, motivating learning environment. Through these activities, students also developed essential values such as gratitude, empathy, environmental awareness, and patriotism—qualities that define every Victorian.

Unleashing the Power of Reading: A Celebration of National Reading

By celebrating reading, DVBRMHS isn’t just opening books; it’s opening minds and paving the way for a brighter future for its students and the nation. After all, when reading is seen as a gift rather than a task, it has the power to transform lives—one page at a time.

Math in Action: Transforming Learning at DVBRMHS

Imagine a place where mathematics isn't stuck in a colorless book but comes to life with fun experiences. At Dr. Victoria B. Roman Memorial High School (DVBRMHS), where Mathematics shines as bright as the sun with the help of The Math Club. Dedicated to making the best learning environment for students, as shown through our constant renovation of the math park, regular enhancement of our facilities, Peer teaching programs, and of course, our math educators who do their best to make sure that their students learn mathematics. Enroll with us to experience how our park, combined with passionate mentors, transforms math learning into an adventure, making every visit a step toward a brighter future.

In our small Math Park, there are many things to see and learn. On the walls, there are math exercises that can be solved by students. Various shapes and signs can also be seen on the walls, and beautiful plants to admire. A bench where we can rest or do math-related activities. We can also hang out there with friends and teachers while studying math. When you visit the Math Park, you may find the right formula you are looking for, learn the correct use of numbers, and sharpen your problem-solving skills in math.

Math teachers and students collaborated to transform the Math Park into a vibrant learning space. They repainted walls with bright colors, added artistic math designs, and built bamboo shades for comfort. Creative decorations like numbers, shapes, and problem-solving stations enhanced the park's educational appeal. Next, we plan to create a large floor puzzle filled with math equations.

Renovations have been made to our math learning center to create a more engaging atmosphere for students. The addition of better seating arrangements—comfortable chairs, fixing the door, better station for books, and group tables- supports different learning preferences and encourages both solo and group work. These updated resources, along with access to knowledgeable staff and tutors, provide students with personalized assistance and a space to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.

One of our many projects is Gulayan Sa Matematika (Gardening in Mathematics). it's a program that offers a unique approach to mathematics education, seamlessly blending practical gardening activities with mathematical concepts.

The core concept involves integrating gardening projects within a park setting. Students actively apply mathematical skills. For example, measuring plot dimensions of plants length, area, and volume.

Crops harvested at the math park garden can help the school for many reasons.

First, for educational purposes. Students can learn math concepts through hands-on activities like measuring plant growth, calculating area and perimeter, or using statistics to track yields.

Second, healthy school Meals. If the crops are edible, they can be used in the school canteen to provide fresh and nutritious food. Lastly, fundraising. Selling the harvested crops can generate funds for school programs and some supplies.

Peer teaching is also one of the things that we do, it's a collaborative method in which our officers take on the role of instructors for their peers, providing an effective means of improving mathematical comprehension. Those who teach not only gain confidence but also reinforce their understanding through the process of explanation, thereby deepening their grasp of the material. Conversely, students who receive instruction find the experience to be more engaging and relatable, as the explanations tend to be more accessible and less intimidating than those provided by a traditional authority figure.

We believe that every student has the potential to excel in mathematics with the right support and environment. That’s why we provide engaging learning experiences, hands-on activities, and a welcoming community that makes math enjoyable and accessible to all. Whether you’re looking to strengthen your skills, discover new ways to solve problems, or simply enjoy a more interactive approach to learning, our school offers an educational experience that goes beyond the classroom.

We also participated in the 5th National Vedic Mathematics Olympiad, with Johan Dale Sevilla earning a Merit Award. Our confidence came from the strong communication and collaboration we’ve built as a team. Actively joining competitions, practicing, and working together have sharpened our problem-solving skills. This is just one of many achievements, and we remain committed to growing, representing our school, and showcasing our passion for math.

At DVBRMHS, we believe that mathematics should be an adventure, not a challenge. Through our vibrant Math Park, peer teaching programs, and innovative projects like Gulayan Sa Matematika, we create an engaging and supportive learning environment where students can develop a deep appreciation for math. By combining hands-on activities, real-world applications, and collaborative learning, we equip students with the confidence and skills they need to succeed.

With every lesson, problem solved, and discovery made, we turn math into an exciting journey that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a passion for lifelong learning. Join us at Dr. Victoria B. Roman Memorial High School and be part of a school that turns challenges into opportunities, making learning both exciting and fulfilling.

Goal Setting and Planning for Clubs: Empowering Students to Succeed

Goal Setting and Planning for Clubs: Empowering Students to Succeed

School clubs play a vital role in shaping students’ holistic development. Beyond academics, clubs provide opportunities for creativity, leadership, teamwork, and personal growth. However, for these organizations to thrive, they need clear direction—goals that are realistic and achievable, long-term plans for sustainability, and alignment with the values and mission of the Department of Education (DepEd). As club advisers, teachers have the unique opportunity to guide students through this process, fostering not only successful clubs but also responsible and empowered young leaders.

Why Goal Setting Matters for School Clubs

Goal setting is more than just a buzzword; it’s the foundation of any successful endeavor. For school clubs, having well-defined goals ensures that members stay focused, motivated, and accountable. In the Philippine setting, where many schools operate under limited resources, goal setting becomes even more critical. It helps prioritize activities, allocate available funds wisely, and maximize the impact of each initiative.

Here’s how you can help your club set meaningful goals:

  1. Start with SMART Goals
Teach students the concept of SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example:
    • Instead of saying, “We want to win competitions,” reframe it as, “Our debate team will participate in at least two interschool tournaments by the end of the semester.”
    • This approach makes goals tangible and easier to track progress.
  2. Encourage Collaboration
Involve all club members in the goal-setting process. Conduct brainstorming sessions where everyone contributes ideas. This fosters ownership and ensures that the goals reflect the collective aspirations of the group.
  3. Break Down Big Goals into Smaller Steps
Large objectives, such as organizing a major event or growing membership numbers, can feel overwhelming. Break them down into manageable tasks. For instance, if the goal is to host an environmental awareness campaign, smaller steps might include creating promotional materials, securing permits, and recruiting volunteers.
  4. Align with DepEd’s Core Values
The DepEd emphasizes Maka-Diyos, Maka-Tao, Makakalikasan, and Makabansa (For God, For People, For Nature, and For Country) as its core values. Ensure that your club’s goals resonate with these principles. A science club could focus on projects promoting environmental conservation (Makakalikasan ), while a community service club might organize outreach programs benefiting marginalized communities (Maka-Tao ).

Developing Long-Term Plans for Growth and Sustainability

While short-term goals keep clubs active and engaged, long-term planning ensures their longevity and relevance. Here’s how to create a roadmap for sustained success:

  1. Create a Vision Statement
Work with your club members to craft a vision statement that outlines what the club hopes to achieve over time. For example, a journalism club might envision itself as “a platform for amplifying student voices and fostering media literacy across our school and community.” This vision serves as a guiding light for future decisions.
  2. Establish a Succession Plan
One common challenge faced by school clubs in the Philippines is the turnover of officers and members every year. To prevent disruptions, develop a succession plan early. Train junior members to take on leadership roles so that transitions are smooth and institutional knowledge is preserved.
  3. Diversify Activities
Keep the club dynamic by introducing new activities that cater to evolving interests. For instance, a music club could expand beyond performances to include workshops on songwriting or instrument repair. Diversification attracts a wider audience and keeps current members excited.
  4. Build Partnerships
Collaborate with other clubs, local organizations, or alumni networks to pool resources and expertise. For example, a robotics club could partner with nearby universities or tech companies for mentorship and sponsorship. Such partnerships enhance the club’s capacity and visibility.
  5. Document Best Practices
Encourage students to document processes, lessons learned, and successful strategies. This creates a valuable repository of information for future members and reinforces accountability.

Aligning Club Objectives with School Values and Mission

The DepEd mandates that all school activities should contribute to the overall development of learners—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and morally. By aligning club objectives with the school’s values and mission, you ensure that the club remains relevant and impactful.

  1. Promote Academic Excellence
Clubs should complement classroom learning. For example, a math club can organize problem-solving contests, while a literature club can hold book discussions that deepen students’ appreciation for reading. These activities reinforce academic skills while making learning enjoyable.
  2. Foster Social Responsibility
Many Filipino schools emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. Encourage clubs to undertake service-oriented projects, such as tree planting drives, fundraising for typhoon victims, or tutoring programs for younger students. Such initiatives instill empathy and civic responsibility.
  3. Celebrate Cultural Heritage
The Philippines is rich in culture and tradition. Clubs can celebrate this diversity by organizing cultural festivals, heritage talks, or art exhibits. Not only does this promote national pride, but it also strengthens students’ identity and connection to their roots.
  4. Support Mental Health and Well-being
Given the increasing awareness of mental health issues among Filipino youth, clubs can incorporate wellness-focused activities. A peer support club, for example, could conduct stress management workshops or mindfulness sessions, contributing to a healthier school environment.

Putting It All Together: A Sample Roadmap

Let’s imagine a scenario involving a newly formed Environmental Advocacy Club at a public high school in Bataan:

  • Short-Term Goals: Organize weekly clean-up drives around the campus, educate peers about waste segregation, and launch a recycling program.
  • Long-Term Goals: Partner with local environmental groups to plant 1,000 trees within three years and establish a permanent eco-garden on school grounds.
  • Alignment with DepEd Values: The club promotes Makakalikasan by protecting the environment and Maka-Bansa by addressing national concerns like climate change.
  • Sustainability Measures: Train incoming Grade 9 students to lead the club after senior members graduate, ensuring continuity.

By following this structured approach, the club achieves measurable results while staying true to its purpose and the broader educational mission.

Final Thoughts

Goal setting and planning are essential tools for transforming school clubs into thriving hubs of innovation and collaboration. By helping students set realistic and achievable goals, developing long-term strategies for growth, and aligning club objectives with DepEd’s core values, advisers can empower their members to make a lasting impact—not just within the school walls but also in the wider community.

As a club adviser, remember that your role is not to dictate but to inspire. Guide your students to dream big, plan smart, and act responsibly. Together, you can build clubs that embody the spirit of Filipino resilience, creativity, and bayanihan—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
