Brigada Pagbasa 2025: Read to Rise – A Brigada Pagbasa Initiative for JHS Learners

In full alignment with the Department of Education’s annual Brigada Eskwela campaign, Brigada Pagbasa 2025 will be launched on June 9 - 13, 2025, with the theme “Read to Rise: A Brigada Pagbasa Initiative for Junior High School Learners.” This school-led reading initiative seeks to provide meaningful support to Grades 7 to 10 learners identified as struggling readers in both English and Filipino.

Brigada Pagbasa 2025: Read to Rise – A Brigada Pagbasa Initiative for JHS Learners

The week-long program is anchored in the belief that every child has the potential to succeed when given the right tools, encouragement, and community support. At the heart of Brigada Pagbasa is the desire to restore reading confidence, nurture comprehension, and promote a culture of collaborative literacy within the school and beyond.

On the first day of the initiative, Grade 7 learners will undergo the San Diego Quick Assessment (SDQA) to determine their reading fluency. Based on the results, all participating learners from Grades 7 to 10 will be grouped into four distinct reading levels: Group A for readers at the frustration level, Group B for those needing instructional support, Group C for learners who are reading independently, and Group D for fluent readers who can be challenged further. This level-based grouping ensures that every learner receives reading activities that are appropriate and responsive to their individual needs.

As the sessions unfold, learners will engage in a series of progressively designed reading experiences. The second day will focus on vocabulary building and guided reading. Facilitators and volunteers will guide students through reading materials specifically curated for their level. Activities will include word decoding, vocabulary enrichment, paired reading, and structured discussions aimed at building fluency and interest in reading.

The third day of the program will highlight oral storytelling and comprehension activities. Learners will be encouraged to retell stories in their own words, engage in reading circles, and participate in simple reflective tasks to check for understanding. This day emphasizes not only what learners can read, but also what they can recall, feel, and express through language.

On the final day, the school will celebrate the gains of the learners and volunteers through a culminating program. Groups will share their learning through mini-presentations—be it a dramatic retelling, a short skit, or a reading reflection. Awards and certificates will be distributed to recognize the most improved readers, the most active volunteers, and all who participated consistently throughout the week.

What sets this year's Brigada Pagbasa apart is its multi-sectoral approach. Community volunteers—composed of teachers, student leaders, parents, and alumni—will be oriented and deployed across the reading groups. Their involvement embodies the true spirit of Brigada: shared responsibility for the success of every learner. These volunteers will be trained in evidence-based practices including echo reading, vocabulary scaffolding, and comprehension mapping, using tools such as graphic organizers and leveled worksheets.

Monitoring learner progress is also a vital part of the program. Facilitators will track each participant using a one-to-five daily rating scale for fluency and comprehension. Learners will complete daily worksheets, and their progress will be documented through journals, photo evidence, and group reflections. Materials include English and Filipino reading passages from Baitang 1 to 11, each paired with questions and answer keys to support facilitators and reinforce independent learning.

An official accomplishment report will be prepared at the close of the program. This will include statistics on learner participation, summaries of reading level progression, notable outcomes, and recommendations for sustaining literacy interventions throughout the school year. Certificates will also be issued to all learners and volunteers who took part in the initiative.

“Read to Rise is not just a reading program—it is a movement. It is our commitment to uplift struggling readers, not through pressure, but through presence, patience, and partnership.”

Through this effort, the school reaffirms its belief that reading is the foundation of learning and that with collective action, every learner can and will rise.
